Safer Journeys to School (SJS)

The Safer Journeys to School (SJS) Programme aims to improve safety for children travelling to and from school.

  • Children boarding or leaving school buses are among the most vulnerable road users, particularly when they are required to cross or walk near the carriageway.
  • A moment’s inattention can have tragic consequences. Collisions involving children around school buses often occur on rural roads and at bus stops where visibility is restricted and drivers fail to see or anticipate a child’s movements.

Drivers remember, that because a bus is so large, a child around a bus may not see you approaching and for the same reason you may not see a child emerging from the front or back of the bus to cross the road. Always take extra care around stationary buses, especially school buses. If in doubt do not pass the bus and let it move off.
