A2 Shore Road – ‘GRAHAM Construction’ Pledges to ‘Share the Road to Zero’

Graham Construction Pledge

The Department of the Environment has welcomed GRAHAM Construction’s support for the ‘Share the Road to Zero’ road safety campaign.

Work is ongoing by GRAHAM Construction to widen the 2.2 mile stretch of the A2 from Jordanstown Road and Trooperslane Road.

Brídín Beckett from DOE Road Safety said, “Share the Road to Zero is a huge community programme with one aim – a vision of zero road deaths in Northern Ireland.  As road users, we all share the road, so this campaign is asking us to also share the responsibility.  As such, we are encouraging citizens in Northern Ireland to sign up to a path towards no deaths on our roads and in turn pledging to use the roads safely.

In 2012 the number of road deaths in the region reached its lowest level since records began in 1931.  However, 48 people died and 48 families were devastated by these tragedies.  Every one of those road deaths is one too many.”

Mrs Beckett added, “The goal of reducing road deaths to zero is a shared community responsibility.  As such, I want to encourage everyone to join up on a journey towards zero road deaths.  Any organisation can support this aspiration by pledging and encouraging members or employees to pledge and adopt safer behaviours on the roads.

As road users, we all have responsibility to behave appropriately – as a driver, a passenger, motorcyclist, cyclist or pedestrian so that we do not take risks and we do not put our own lives or anyone else’s in danger.

The support of the community is vital if we are to further reduce road casualties.  The A2 Shore Road is a key arterial route used by 35,000 commuters daily.  GRAHAM Construction recognises that it can influence many road users and has been proactive in using its position to help promote the message by joining the Department’s campaign.  GRAHAM Construction plays an important and visible role in this community.  This means that its support for the Share the Road to Zero campaign will be influential in saving lives and helping us achieve zero road deaths in Northern Ireland.”

Robin Fleming, Health and Safety Manager with GRAHAM Construction said, “GRAHAM Construction is delighted to be the first construction company to partner with DOE in its ‘Share the Road to Zero’ innovative campaign to improve road safety.  As an organisation we have an on-going behavioural safety programme where we are focusing on the beliefs and attitudes of everyone on site regarding safety, by influencing these we hope to achieve our ultimate goal in changing behaviours towards safety on site.

The Shore Road scheme has a high-risk interface with live traffic along the route, with four significant pinch points.  The site team are managing these interfaces in a proactive manner, which will contribute significantly towards the target of zero collisions on the scheme.”
