Beware the Dangers of Country Roads

Did you know 2/3 of all road deaths are on country roads?

The Highway Code Rule 154 advises:

Take extra care on country roads and reduce your speed at approaches to bends, which can be sharper than they appear, and at junctions and turnings, which may be partially hidden.

Be prepared for pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists, slow moving farm vehicles or mud on the road surface. Make sure you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear. You should also reduce your speed where country roads enter villages.

Remember – the speed limit is the absolute maximum and does not mean that it is safe to drive at that speed irrespective of the conditions.

Each rural road has its own particular conditions to consider. For instance; junctions, camber, hills, bends and an individual micro-climate. Inclement, clement weather and seasonal activities also impact on the conditions of any stretch of road.

As a driver, it is YOUR responsibility to drive at a speed appropriate for the conditions.

Your risky driving catches up with you.
